Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 2 · Lesson 6 of 7

Use social media on purpose

Your attention and your phone

Social media is not all bad. It keeps you in touch with family abroad, helps you find communities, jobs and mentors, and can teach you things. The problem is unplanned use.

Try deciding in advance when and why you open each app: LinkedIn for twenty minutes on Sunday to message people, Instagram after dinner to see friends, YouTube only from a saved list of lessons. Unfollow or mute accounts that leave you comparing, anxious or angry, and follow ones that teach or encourage you. Notice how you feel after each app; that tells you more than any rule.

Common trapquitting everything in a burst of guilt, then coming back to the same habits a week later because nothing replaced them.
