Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 2 · Lesson 2 of 7

Why your phone is so hard to put down

Your attention and your phone

Many apps are designed to keep you using them, because your attention is what they sell to advertisers. Feeds have no bottom, so there is no natural stopping point. Rewards are unpredictable: most posts are dull but the next one might be great, a pattern that makes checking hard to stop.

Notifications, red badges and streaks pull you back. Short videos give a fast hit of something new every few seconds, which can make slower tasks like reading feel unbearable by comparison. Knowing this is not an excuse; it is a reason to stop blaming only yourself and to change the setup.

Common trapfighting a system built by thousands of engineers with willpower alone, instead of changing what the phone does and where it is.
