Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 2 · Lesson 7 of 7

Learn to be bored again

Your attention and your phone

If every spare moment, the queue, the bus, the minute before class, is filled with your phone, slower tasks start to feel unbearable. Reading a textbook chapter or debugging code requires sitting with some boredom and frustration. You can rebuild that tolerance.

Leave your phone in your pocket for small waits. Walk without headphones sometimes. When you feel the urge to check during study, notice it, wait a minute and see if it passes.

Cal Newport suggests scheduling your internet breaks instead of taking them whenever you feel like it, so focus becomes the default. Boredom is also where ideas and reflection come from.

Common traptreating every moment of boredom as a problem to solve with your phone.
