Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 2 · Lesson 5 of 7

Out of sight while you focus

Your attention and your phone

Where your phone is matters. Some studies have found that people do slightly worse on thinking tasks when their phone is on the desk, even face down and silent, than when it is in another room, though later studies have found smaller or mixed effects.

Either way, a phone you cannot see is a phone you check less. During study or deep work, put it in a bag, a drawer or another room. If you need it for two-factor login or a family emergency, keep the ringer on for calls only, out of reach.

Focus apps like Forest, which grows a virtual tree while you stay off your phone, help some people.

Common trapkeeping your phone next to you "for the timer" and checking it every time you look at the time.
