Stage 3 · Lesson 5 of 7
Action comes before motivation
We often wait to feel motivated before starting. But for most people, especially on hard or boring tasks, motivation tends to follow action rather than come before it. Behavioural activation, an approach used in treating low mood, is built on the same idea: you schedule small, valued activities and do them whether or not you feel like it, and the feeling often improves afterwards.
For study and work, this means deciding in advance what you will do and when, then doing a small piece even when you do not want to. Afterwards, notice how you feel.
Common trapwaiting for a burst of motivation that may not come, and losing days or weeks to waiting. Some days you will start without motivation, and that counts.
