Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 3 · Lesson 2 of 7

Make the first step tiny

Start when motivation is gone

The hardest part of most tasks is the first two minutes. Once you have started, the task usually feels less bad than you imagined. So shrink the start until it feels almost silly: open the document and write one sentence, solve one easy question, read the first page, write the title of the CV.

Tell yourself you can stop after that if you want. Most of the time you will keep going, and if you do not, you have still started, which makes tomorrow easier. This works because it lowers the uncomfortable feeling that makes you avoid the task in the first place.

Common trapsetting a first step that is still a big task in disguise, like "finish chapter 3", and then wondering why you cannot begin.
