Stage 5 · Lesson 6 of 7
The "learning styles" myth
You may have been told you are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner and should study that way. Reviews of the research have found little evidence that teaching people in their preferred style helps them learn more. Preferences are real; the benefit is not.
What does reliably help almost everyone is testing yourself instead of rereading, spacing study over days, explaining ideas in your own words and mixing types of problems. Self-awareness here means knowing your habits: do you reread because it feels comfortable?
Do you avoid practice questions because they feel hard? The Focus, habits and time roadmap at /roadmaps/focus-habits/ covers study methods in more depth.
Common trapusing a learning style label to avoid the harder methods that actually work.
