Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 5 · Lesson 3 of 7

People and your energy

Your energy and how you work best

Introversion and extraversion are better seen as a scale than as boxes, and the Big Five model measures them that way. People nearer the introverted end often need quiet time to recharge after a lot of social contact; people nearer the extraverted end often feel flat when alone for too long.

Most people are in between and change by situation. Susan Cain's book Quiet makes a strong case that quieter people have real strengths, like listening and depth, that loud classrooms and offices often miss. Know how much social time you need, and plan recovery after heavy days, like a fair, a wedding or a full day of meetings.

Common trapusing a label like "introvert" as a reason to avoid things that matter to you, such as networking or speaking up.
