Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 2 · Lesson 5 of 7

Good at it, but drained by it

Find your real strengths

Some things you do well do not come from strengths. They are learned behaviours: skills you got good at because you had to, like being the family organiser, doing the class presentation every time or fixing everyone's laptop. Others praise them, so it feels like they must be your calling.

But if an activity leaves you empty every time, even when it goes well, building a career around it will be hard to sustain. A quick test: before, during and after the activity, do you feel pulled towards it or pushed into it? Both kinds of ability are valuable, and you will still use learned behaviours at work.

Common trapchoosing a path because you are good at something without asking how it makes you feel to do it every day.
