Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 2 · Lesson 7 of 7

Use a top strength in a new way

Find your real strengths

Knowing a strength is not the same as using it. A simple exercise tested in positive psychology research asks people to use one of their signature strengths in a new way every day for a week. If your strength is curiosity, ask one real question in class or a meeting each day.

If it is kindness, help one classmate who is stuck. If it is love of learning, teach someone a concept you just learned. Note in your journal what you did and how it felt.

Over a week you learn whether the strength is real, where it fits in your current life and where it has no room.

Common traptreating strengths as a personality description to admire instead of something you practise and build into your days.
