Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 2 · Lesson 4 of 7

Ask others when you were at your best

Find your real strengths

The Reflected Best Self exercise, developed at the University of Michigan, asks other people for stories rather than opinions. Send a short message to five to ten people from different parts of your life, such as a friend, a classmate, a teacher, a sibling, a manager: "I am trying to understand my strengths.

Could you tell me about a specific time you saw me at my best, and what I did?" Collect the replies, then look for themes, just as you did with your own stories. People often notice strengths you take for granted because they come easily to you. It can feel awkward to ask, so say why you are asking.

Common trapasking only people who will flatter you, or asking for general praise instead of a specific story.
