Final Year Project Report Best Practices

Chapter 8 · Practice 3 of 5

Disclose and cite AI use in the way your rules require

From Use AI tools honestly within your university's rules

Why it matters

If you used a generative AI tool, say so clearly. APA Style's guidance, for example, treats the company as the author, uses the year of the tool's version, and adds a bracketed description:

text
OpenAI. (2026). ChatGPT [Large language model]. https://chatgpt.com
In text: (OpenAI, 2026)

APA also suggests describing how you used the tool in the method section or introduction, and has published guidance on an AI contribution statement that sets out what the tool did and what you did. If your department uses IEEE, ask your supervisor for the preferred format.

Keep the evidence: save share links or exports of the important chats, with dates. If your use is ever questioned, a clear record of what you asked and how you used the answer is your best support.

Do

  • Include an AI use statement if your rules allow AI
  • Save links or exports of key chats with dates

Avoid

  • Using AI and saying nothing about it
