Final Year Project Report Best Practices

Chapter 8 · Practice 5 of 5

Verify every fact, reference and line of code an AI tool gives you

From Use AI tools honestly within your university's rules

Why it matters

Generative AI tools can state wrong facts confidently, invent references that look real, and produce code with subtle bugs or security problems. In a report, each of these becomes your mistake.

Rules for anything that came from a tool:

  • References: find and open the source. If you cannot find it, it may not exist.
  • Facts and numbers: confirm them in a primary source and cite that source, not the tool.
  • Code: read it, run it, test it and make sure you understand it before it goes into the project.
  • Explanations: check them against documentation or your course material.

Examiners increasingly ask students to explain specific lines of code or specific claims in their report. Verification is what lets you answer.

Do

  • Confirm every AI-suggested reference exists before citing it
  • Test and understand AI-suggested code before using it

Avoid

  • Citing a chatbot as the source of a factual claim
