Chapter 8 · Practice 1 of 5
Find out your university's and supervisor's rules on AI before you use it
Why it matters
There is no single rule. Some universities ban generative AI in assessed writing, some allow it with disclosure, and many leave it to departments or supervisors. Rules for the code may differ from rules for the report.
Before you use any AI tool on the project, find out:
- Is there a university or department policy on generative AI in assessments?
- Does your supervisor allow it, and for which parts (code, grammar, research, writing)?
- How should use be disclosed: a statement, citations, an appendix?
Get the answer in writing, for example in an email or your meeting notes. If the rules are unclear, ask, and follow the stricter reading until you hear back. Not knowing the rule is rarely accepted as a defence.
Do
- Ask your supervisor about AI use early and record the answer
- Check rules for both code and report
Avoid
- Assuming AI use is allowed because classmates use it
