What it is
JetBrains gives students and teachers free individual licences for its paid IDEs and tools. That includes IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate for Java and Kotlin, PyCharm Professional for Python and data work, WebStorm, Rider, CLion, GoLand, DataGrip and more. These professional editions add features such as database tools, web frameworks and remote development.
Who can apply
Students and faculty from accredited educational institutions (high schools, colleges and universities), in a programme that takes one or more years of full-time study. The licence is strictly for non-commercial educational use, including academic research.
Timeline
There is no deadline. Licences are valid for one year. If you are still studying full-time, you can renew for another year.
How to get in
- Apply on the student pack page with your official university email; this is usually the fastest.
- No university email? Use an ISIC or ITIC card or upload official documents. Uploads are checked by hand, so allow time.
- Already have the GitHub Student Developer Pack? You can link your GitHub account instead.
- Activate the licence in the IDE by signing in to your JetBrains account.
What you get
A full professional toolset free for the length of your studies. After you graduate, JetBrains offers a graduation discount on a personal subscription; check the current terms on its site.
Things to watch
- Do not use the educational licence for paid freelance or company work. Buy a commercial or personal licence for that.
- Keep one JetBrains account for all your licences so renewals do not get lost.
- Free community editions of IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm remain available if you do not qualify.
