AI data and training work (AI trainer)
Opens with creditsFor students and graduates who want paid remote work helping AI companies build their data: labelling images, text and audio, or writing, rating and fixing model answers in your field or in code. By the end you understand what the work is and who pays for it, can spot the scams, have the core skills platforms test, know how to apply, get paid and stay safe, and have a plan to move up into reviewer, specialist, data or ML roles.
By the end, you will be able to
- Explain what labelled data, demonstrations, preference data, evals and safety testing are, and where your work ends up
- Judge pay, project gaps and contractor status honestly, and recognise the scams aimed at people looking for this work
- Follow a long guideline exactly and consistently, and understand how platforms measure quality
- Annotate images, video, text and audio in Label Studio or CVAT, or write ideal responses, rate against rubrics, fact-check and review code
- Apply to the platforms that operate in your country, pass their qualification tests and set up payment that works where you live
- Keep records, handle taxes and registration in general terms, and plan a move into reviewer, specialist, data or ML roles
The path
6 stages, in the order to learn them. Open one to start.
1What AI data work is and why it existsUnderstand why AI models need people: labelled examples for traditional models, written demonstrations and preference choices for chatbots, and human testing for quality and safety. Then see who pays for this work and what the 2026 demand data actually says.6 topics · ~2 weeks
- 1Labelled data and why models need itMost machine learning still learns from examples with answers attached.
- 2What AI trainers actually doAI trainer work improves chatbots and coding assistants rather than labelling raw data.
- 3Demonstrations, preferences and RLHFChatbots are trained in stages.
- 4Evals and safety testingOnce a model is trained, companies need to know how good and how safe it is.
- 5Who pays for the workYour work usually passes through a chain.
- 6What the 2026 demand data saysThere is real evidence of demand.
6 in this stageOpen this stage2The honest pictureLook at the work as it really is before you invest time: pay that varies by country and project, work that comes in projects and can stop, contractor status with no employment benefits, and a lot of scams aimed at people looking for exactly this work.7 topics · ~1 week
- 1Pay varies by country, project and skillThere is no single rate for this work.
- 2Project-based work that can pauseThis is not a job with a salary.
- 3Never pay for training or registrationThe most common scam in this field asks you to pay to start work: a "registration fee", a "training course" you must buy, a "verification deposit", or paid…
- 4Fake recruiters and payment tricksOther scams look like work.
- 5Your account is yours alonePlatforms verify identity because clients need to know exactly who touched their data.
- 6Disturbing content and your wellbeingSome projects ask you to review harmful material so models learn to refuse or flag it: violence, hate speech, self-harm or sexual content.
- 7Is this work right for you?People who do well at this work share a few traits.
7 in this stageOpen this stage- Core AI trainer skillsBuild the skills AI trainer tests check: reading a long guideline exactly, handling edge cases, staying consistent, and understanding how quality is measured. Then the craft: writing ideal responses, rating against rubrics, side-by-side comparisons with written justifications, fact-checking, writing hard prompts and reviewing AI-generated code.10 topics · ~4 weeksOpens with credits
- Getting accepted on platformsLearn how the main platforms recruit and test AI trainers, which ones operate where you live, and how to show your degree, field or coding expertise honestly. Then apply to several and sit their assessments properly.7 topics · ~2 weeksOpens with credits
- Building a track record and getting paidKeep your quality high enough to stay on projects, use feedback well, get paid through a method that works in your country, keep records, and understand taxes and freelancer registration in general terms.7 topics · ~2 weeksOpens with credits
- Moving upTurn task work into a career step: become a reviewer or lead, take on specialist projects, and, if you want, use your experience as a starting point for data analytics, machine learning or AI engineering.7 topics · ~3 weeksOpens with credits

You have seen the open stages of the AI data and training work roadmap. Every topic it covers is listed above, and an account opens the rest: what each topic means, a question to check yourself, the courses, the practice and Tauseef's advice for every stage. Early access is open: sign up and your account is active shortly after.
Everything here is free to learn from. A few things, like adding a roadmap, keeping a cheat sheet or asking Tauseef a question, use credits. You get 15 when you join, your first roadmap is free, and if you are learning seriously and run out, you can ask for more. Credits only make sure the platform goes to people who are actually learning.

- LLM Evaluation ChecklistAn LLM evaluation checklist: success criteria, eval datasets, code and model graders, judge calibration, agent evals, safety tests and production monitoring, with how to verify each check.

Project structures
See all- GenAI RAG app (FastAPI) project structureFor developers turning a "chat with your documents" demo into an app people can rely on. A FastAPI backend where every layer has a home: ingestion workers, retrieval, prompts as versioned files, model clients with fallbacks and cost caps, guards, evals that gate CI, and tracing, so a wrong answer can be traced to the step that caused it.
- AI agent with an MCP server project structureFor developers who want to give AI assistants safe access to their own data or API. A TypeScript MCP server built on the official SDK, organised by feature (tasks, projects) with each feature owning its tools, resources and prompts, served over stdio for local hosts and Streamable HTTP with OAuth for remote ones, plus a small agent and the evals that prove a model can use it.
- Machine learning project project structureFor students and analysts whose model works in a notebook and now needs to be reproducible, reviewable, served and watched. It starts from the Cookiecutter Data Science v2 layout (immutable raw data, numbered notebooks, a real Python package) and grows into versioned data with DVC, typed parameters, data validation with pandera, experiment tracking and a model registry with MLflow, a FastAPI prediction service, drift monitoring and, for a team, scheduled retraining, model cards, fairness checks and shadow deployment.
Career questions
See all- Which freelance skills is AI replacing, and what should I switch to?AI is squeezing basic, repetitive freelance work first: plain data entry, simple transcription and translation, generic articles, basic logos and simple product descriptions. Work that combines a skill with judgement, client context or systems is holding up better, including automation, AI integration, analytics, specialist writing and full projects that own a business outcome.
- Which AI tools do employers expect junior developers to know in 2026?Employers rarely require a specific brand. They expect you to use an AI coding assistant well (in the editor and in the terminal), to review and test what it produces, to call an LLM API in a small feature, and to explain when you would not use AI. Pick one assistant, learn it properly, and show judgement in your projects.
- How do I use AI to become a better engineer instead of becoming dependent on it?Decide the job AI does before you open it. Use it as a tutor, reviewer and sparring partner that explains and challenges, not a vending machine that hands you finished code. Attempt first, ask second, and always be able to explain and defend what you ship.
