Stage 3 · Lesson 4 of 6
When family compares you
For many people the loudest comparison is not online but at home: "Your cousin got into medicine", "The neighbour's son already earns in dollars". Parents who say this usually mean well. They worry about your future, they feel pressure from relatives, and comparison was how they were raised too.
It still hurts, and repeated over years it can become your inner critic. You cannot control what relatives say, but you can choose how much weight it carries. Remind yourself that the comparison leaves out your interests, your strengths and your circumstances.
If it feels safe, tell a parent calmly how it affects you and what would help instead, such as asking about your plans.
Common trapeither arguing every time or silently accepting their scoreboard as your own.
