Building real confidence

Stage 4 · Lesson 6 of 6

Asking for feedback

Collecting evidence and small wins

Self-doubt guesses at what others think, and the guesses are usually harsher than the truth. Feedback replaces guessing with information. Ask specific questions to people whose judgement you trust: "What is one thing I did well in that presentation, and one thing to improve?"

Specific questions get useful answers; "Was it OK?" gets "Yes, fine." When you get feedback, listen, thank them and write it down in your evidence file, including the positive parts. You do not have to agree with all of it.

Over time, feedback shows you that your work is often better than you feared and that the gaps are fixable.

Common trapavoiding feedback because you fear criticism, which leaves your inner critic as your only source.
