Building real confidence

Stage 4 · Lesson 3 of 6

Knowing your strengths

Collecting evidence and small wins

People with low confidence can usually list their weaknesses easily and struggle to name strengths. Strengths are not only marks or technical skills; they include character strengths such as curiosity, kindness, persistence, fairness and humour.

The free VIA Character Strengths survey, based on research in positive psychology, gives you a ranked list of 24 character strengths. Take it, then look for evidence of your top strengths in your own life. You can also ask three people who know you well: "What do you think I am good at?"

Their answers often surprise people. Then look for ways to use your strengths more in studies and work.

Common trapdismissing strengths because they come easily to you. That is often what makes them strengths.
