Building real confidence

Stage 4 · Lesson 5 of 6

A ladder of small challenges

Collecting evidence and small wins

CBT uses graded exposure to reduce fear: instead of facing the scariest situation at once, you build a ladder of steps from easy to hard and climb one rung at a time. For speaking in class, the ladder might be: ask a classmate a question, ask the teacher a question after class, ask one question in a small tutorial, answer a question in a large class, give a short presentation.

Stay with each step until it feels manageable, then move up. Expect some anxiety each time; that is how the fear learns it was wrong. Write how anxious you expected to be and how it actually went.

Common trapskipping straight to the top rung, failing, and deciding you cannot do it, or staying on the bottom rung forever.
