Family expectations and your own path

Stage 4 · Lesson 4 of 6

Your plan B

Build your case with evidence

The question your parents are really asking is often "and if it fails?" Answer it before they ask. A good plan B is specific: if I have no job offer by a certain date, I will take a job in a related role, finish the degree you wanted, sit the exam, or return to the family business.

It can also be a safety net: savings, a qualification you complete alongside, or a skill that earns steadily. Having a plan B does not mean you expect to fail. It shows you have thought about risk the way adults do.

Common traprefusing to discuss failure because it feels like admitting doubt. To a parent, refusing to discuss it looks like you have not thought about it.
