Focus, habits and time: get started, keep going, rest well

Stage 4 · Lesson 5 of 7

Design your environment

Habits that stick

It is much easier to change your surroundings than to resist them all day. Make good habits obvious and easy: leave your notebook open on the desk, put your running shoes by the door, keep a water bottle where you study, bookmark the course on your browser's first tab.

Make bad habits hidden and harder: charge your phone outside the bedroom, log out of distracting sites, keep snacks out of sight. If you share a room or a home, look for what you can control, such as a corner of the table, a bag you pack the night before or headphones.

Wood's research suggests that people who seem to have great self-control often simply have fewer temptations around them.

Common trapfighting the same temptation every day.
