Stage 6 · Lesson 7 of 7
End the day with a clear stop
Unfinished tasks tend to keep running in your head at night, making it hard to rest. Psychologists E. J.
Masicampo and Roy Baumeister found that making a specific plan for an unfinished goal reduced how much it intruded on people's thoughts, even before they acted on it. Newport recommends a shutdown ritual at the end of each study or work day: check what is left, write tomorrow's first task and where you stopped, glance at the calendar and then stop.
Some people say a phrase or close the laptop deliberately to mark the end. This gives you permission to rest without guilt, and makes tomorrow's start much easier.
Common trapworking in vague bits until you fall asleep, never really working and never really resting.
