Freelancing

Stage 5 of 8 · 7 lessons · ~4 weeks

Landing your first clients

Find the right first clients and get replies: targeted Upwork proposals, Fiverr briefs and fast responses, or warm introductions and outreach that is not spam, plus the discovery questions and red flags that apply everywhere.

Start: Starting with your warm network

Lessons· one lesson for each topic, in this order

  1. 1Starting with your warm network
  2. 2Cold outreach that is not spam
  3. 3Referral asks and a simple pipeline
  4. 4Proposals after a call
  5. 5Discovery questions before you quote
  6. 6Spotting clients to avoid
  7. 7A weekly routine for finding work

Do this

  • List 50 people in your warm network and message them personally about your service.
  • Ask for introductions to one specific kind of client.
  • Research and send a few personal outreach messages each week, with one follow-up.
  • Keep every prospect in a pipeline with a next action and date.
  • Run discovery calls before quoting.
  • Send a written proposal within two days of each call.
  • Review which source brings replies every week and do more of it.

Keep handy

  • A simple prospect pipeline with stages, next actions and dates

  • Let prospects book discovery calls without back and forth

Also worth your time

Before moving on: Four weeks of a tracked client-finding routine (proposals, brief replies or outreach with results), at least one discovery conversation, and your first paid project or a clear list of what to change next.

Tauseef's advice
Fewer, better attempts win. Ten proposals or messages that show you understood the client's problem beat a hundred copies. And if a first client feels wrong, walk away: a bad first client can cost you a review, weeks of work or your account.
