Layoffs and AI: stay hard to cut, bounce back if it happens

Stage 4 · Lesson 3 of 7

Keep the skills AI cannot replace sharp

Work with AI so it raises your value

As AI writes more code, the valuable work moves to judging it. That means reading code critically and spotting the subtle bug, a failure across services, understanding why a system is slow, designing something that will still make sense in two years, and knowing what not to build.

These skills come from doing hard things yourself. If AI does all your thinking, they fade: this is called . So keep some practice without the assistant: debug one problem a week by hand, write the design before asking for code, explain every AI suggestion before you accept it. Review AI output as carefully as a junior colleague's .

Common trapaccepting code you could not have written or explained, which feels fast until the day it breaks in and nobody understands it.

A question to check yourself, an AI practice session and 2 cheat sheet entries come when you add the roadmap to your account. Add it
