Looking after your mental health

Stage 6 · Lesson 1 of 7

Counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist: who does what

How to actually get help

A family doctor or GP is often a good first step: they can check for physical causes, such as thyroid problems or anaemia, and refer you on. A counsellor listens and helps you work through problems, usually for everyday stress, grief, relationships and adjustment; training varies a lot between countries.

A clinical psychologist has advanced training in assessing mental health problems and providing structured therapy such as CBT. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health: they diagnose, can prescribe medication, and usually handle more severe or complex problems.

Many people see a psychiatrist for assessment and a psychologist or counsellor for regular therapy. Spiritual or religious support can be part of your life alongside this.

Common trapnot starting at all because you are unsure which door to knock on. Any of them can point you to the right one.
