Handling rejection and setbacks

Stage 3 · Lesson 3 of 7

Know your options: resits, repeats and help

Failed exams and a low CGPA

Most universities have rules for what happens after a failed course: a supplementary or resit exam, repeating the course, improving the grade, or taking a semester off. The rules differ between universities and change, so read your own university's official rules or ask the examination office, not only the class group.

Ask about deadlines and fees early. Many universities also have student advisers or counsellors who can help with a study plan or a difficult term. If illness or a family emergency caused the failure, ask whether there is a process for special circumstances, and keep evidence.

Common trapassuming nothing can be done and missing a resit deadline because you were too embarrassed to ask.
