Speaking and being heard

Stage 2 · Lesson 3 of 6

Asking in class

Asking questions in class and at work

In a classroom, short and specific questions work best: "On slide 12, why does the loop start at 1?" is easier to answer than "I did not understand anything." If you are nervous about asking in front of everyone, start by asking after class or in office hours, then move to asking during the lecture once that feels normal.

Sit nearer the front; it is easier to speak when you do not have to project across the whole room. If the teacher is dismissive, ask a classmate or use office hours. One unkind reaction does not mean all teachers react that way.

Common trapcollecting questions until the night before the exam, when there is no one left to ask.
