Speaking and being heard

Stage 6 · Lesson 1 of 7

Clarity matters more than accent

Speaking English as a second language

Researchers Murray Munro and Tracey Derwing studied accented English and found that accent strength and being understood are largely separate: even a strong accent can be perfectly clear, while problems with stress, rhythm and intonation tend to cause more misunderstanding than individual sounds.

So the goal is not to sound British or American. It is to be easy to understand. Everyone has an accent, including native speakers, and global teams are full of them. Focus on pace, clear word stress and finishing your words.

Common trapspending months trying to remove your accent, and staying quiet meanwhile, when slowing down and pausing would help listeners far more.
