Speaking and being heard

Stage 6 · Lesson 6 of 7

Useful phrases for work and class

Speaking English as a second language

A few ready-made phrases make it much easier to join a conversation without building every sentence from scratch. Learn some for each situation. Asking: "Could you say that again more slowly?", "What do you mean by...?"

Joining in: "Can I add something?", "Building on what Ali said..." Disagreeing: "I see it a bit differently." Buying time: "That is a good question, let me think for a second."

Checking: "So what you are saying is..." Write a list of 15 phrases on a card or in your phone and practise them aloud until they come automatically.

Common traptranslating word for word from your first language, which can sound more abrupt or more formal than you intend.
