Speaking and being heard

Stage 6 · Lesson 4 of 7

Shadowing: copy a speaker

Speaking English as a second language

Shadowing is a simple practice technique: play a short clip of clear English, a few sentences at a time, and repeat it aloud straight after the speaker, copying their rhythm, pauses and intonation, not only the words. Start with slow, clear audio such as a BBC Learning English episode, which has transcripts you can follow.

Begin with the transcript, then try without it. Ten minutes a day is enough. Record yourself sometimes and compare.

Choose clips about topics you talk about, such as technology or work, so the vocabulary is useful.

Common traponly listening or reading in English, which builds understanding but not your ability to speak smoothly.

A question to check yourself come when you add the roadmap to your account. Add it
