Building your support system

Stage 5 · Lesson 1 of 6

Choosing communities that fit

Communities online and offline

There are communities for almost everything: tech groups such as Google Developer Groups, student societies, sports clubs, faith groups, volunteering organisations, language exchanges, hobby clubs, alumni networks. Choose two or three that match what you need: one for your career, one for your interests or wellbeing, and perhaps one connected to your roots.

Look for groups that meet regularly, welcome newcomers and have some active members your age. Visit a few times before deciding.

Common trapjoining twenty WhatsApp and Discord groups and being part of none. Belonging comes from showing up in a few places, not from having many memberships.
