Building your support system

Stage 5 · Lesson 5 of 6

Faith, family and local roots

Communities online and offline

For many people, support comes through faith communities, extended family, neighbourhoods and cultural associations. A mosque, temple, gurdwara or church community, a cousin network or a regional student association can offer meals, practical help, belonging and elders who care about you, especially in a new city or abroad.

These are real support systems, as valuable as career networks. Take part in the way that fits your own beliefs and comfort, and do not feel you have to choose between roots and new circles.

Common trapassuming that support only counts if it is professional or online. For many students, the uncle who picks them up from the airport matters more than any network.
