Stage 5 · Lesson 4 of 7
Saying no and setting limits
Confidence includes saying no to things that do not fit, without long apologies. Students and new employees often say yes to everything to be liked or to seem keen, and then struggle. You can be polite and clear: "Thank you for thinking of me.
I cannot take this on this week because I have exams. Could I help next month?" Or at work: "I can do this, but it would delay X.
Which is more important?" Offer an alternative when you can. In cultures where saying no to elders or seniors feels disrespectful, focus on the reason and your respect for them.
Common trapsaying a vague "maybe" that becomes a yes, or over-explaining until you talk yourself back into it.
