Stage 1 · Lesson 1 of 6
Confidence, self-esteem and arrogance
Confidence is trust in your ability to handle a particular thing: a presentation, a coding task, a conversation. It can be high in one area and low in another. Self-esteem is your overall sense of your own worth.
Arrogance is different from both: it is claiming ability you do not have, or looking down on others, and it often hides insecurity. Real confidence is quieter. It sounds like "I have not done this before, but I can learn it" and "I do not know, let me find out". Confident people still feel nervous; they act anyway.
Common trapthinking confidence means loud, certain and never doubting. Many of the most capable people you know are quietly confident, and many loud people are not.
