Stage 3 · Lesson 2 of 6
Find the goal you share
Under most family disagreements, you want many of the same things. Your parents want you to be secure, respected, healthy and close to them. You probably want security and respect too, and you want to do work you can live with for forty years.
The fight is usually about the route, not the destination. Say the shared goal out loud: "We both want me to have a stable, respected career that can support the family." Once that is agreed, the question becomes which route gets there, which is a question evidence can help with.
Common trapstarting with the route ("I want to do design"), which makes the goal invisible and the disagreement total.
