Doing it by hand first
For many products you can deliver the result by hand before you automate it. You could send the reminders yourself, build the report in a spreadsheet or customise the template manually. This approach is called a concierge : a first version where a person does the work behind the scenes.
It teaches you exactly what customers need. It tests whether they pay. It shows which steps are worth automating, all while you write almost no code.
It also gives you your first success stories to share. It does not scale, and that is the point: you only automate what has proved valuable.
