Stage 7 · Lesson 1 of 6
Comparison after a setback
Leon Festinger's social comparison theory describes how people judge themselves against others, and after a setback almost everyone compares upwards: the classmate with the offer, the friend whose startup raised money. Upward comparison can motivate you when the gap feels closable, but it hurts when it turns into "they are better than me".
Compare more fairly: with your own past self, or with people at the same stage and from similar starting points. Remember you are seeing their results, not their failures or their advantages.
Common trapturning someone else's success into evidence of your failure, when one has nothing to do with the other.
