Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 7 · Lesson 2 of 7

Choosing courses, electives and a specialisation

Turn self-knowledge into choices

Whether you are choosing a degree, electives, a final year project or a specialisation, the same method helps. Compare each option against your criteria, not only against marks or what is popular this year. Talk to two students who took it, look at the actual syllabus and assignments, and try a free online lesson in the subject before committing.

Notice energy as well as ability: a subject you are slightly worse at but genuinely curious about may serve you better than one where you score well and feel nothing. Keep real limits in view, like fees, merit cut-offs and what your family can support.

Common trapchoosing the option everyone around you chose, then discovering in the second year that it never fitted you.
