Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 4 · Lesson 6 of 7

Respond, do not suppress

Name your emotions and read what they tell you

Pushing feelings down tends to backfire. Research on emotion suppression suggests it does not reduce the feeling inside and can make it harder to think clearly and connect with others. Responding well usually means a pause, then a choice.

Name the feeling. Take a few slow breaths. Move your body: a short walk changes more than you expect.

Talk to someone you trust. Write it down. Then ask: is there something to do about this now, or is this a feeling to let pass?

Sometimes the right response is action, like sending a difficult message; sometimes it is rest.

Common trapthinking emotional control means not feeling anything. It means feeling it and still choosing what you do next.
