Stage 1 · Lesson 6 of 7
Observe like a scientist, not a judge
Self-awareness goes wrong when every observation becomes a verdict. "I avoided my assignment again" is useful data. "I avoided it again because I am useless" is a judgement, and it makes you want to stop looking.
Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion suggests that people who treat their mistakes with the kindness they would show a friend are more willing to admit them and learn from them, not less. Try writing about yourself in the third person for a line or two, as if describing someone you like and are curious about.
Common trapusing your journal as a place to attack yourself. If writing keeps bringing up heavy, hopeless feelings, the Looking after your mental health roadmap at /roadmaps/mental-health/ is a better next step than more self-analysis.
A question to check yourself and an AI practice session come when you add the roadmap to your account. Add it
