Knowing yourself: strengths, values and what you actually want

Stage 1 · Lesson 1 of 7

Two kinds of self-awareness

Start noticing: what self-knowledge is, and is not

Organisational psychologist Tasha Eurich describes two kinds of self-awareness. Internal self-awareness is how clearly you see your own values, feelings, strengths and reactions. External self-awareness is how well you understand how other people see you.

Her research found the two do not always go together: some people know their inner world well but have no idea how they come across, and others read the room perfectly but cannot say what they want. You need both. Internal awareness helps you choose a path that fits; external awareness helps you work with people and spot habits that hold you back.

Common trapbelieving you already know yourself well because you think about yourself a lot. Thinking a lot is not the same as seeing clearly.
