Speaking and being heard

Stage 1 · Lesson 4 of 7

Quiet is not a flaw

Why speaking up is hard

Some people are introverts: they think before speaking, prefer smaller groups and find big social events tiring. Susan Cain's book Quiet argues that schools and workplaces often reward the loudest voice rather than the best idea, and that introverts bring real strengths, such as careful thinking and listening.

Being quiet is not something to cure. The goal of this roadmap is not to turn you into the loudest person in the room. It is to make sure that when you have something useful to say, you can say it, in a way that suits you: a prepared point, a written follow-up, a one-to-one chat.

Common trapcopying an extroverted style that feels fake and exhausting.
