Speaking and being heard

Stage 1 · Lesson 6 of 7

Start with small repetitions

Why speaking up is hard

Confidence in speaking comes from doing it many times, starting small. A ladder helps: ask a shop assistant a question, then a classmate, then a teacher after class, then a question in class, then a comment in a meeting, then a short talk. Climb one step at a time and stay on a step until it feels ordinary.

Set a weekly target, such as speaking once in every meeting or class, and count it in a notebook. The count matters more than how good each attempt was.

Common trapjumping straight to the hardest situation, such as a big presentation, having a bad experience and deciding you are not a speaker.
