Stage 6 · Lesson 6 of 6
Honour what you can of their wishes
Even when you choose a different path, you can honour much of what your family wants. You can stay close, call often, respect religious and family traditions, help with siblings, contribute money when you can, and make them proud in ways they understand.
You can choose a respected employer, finish a degree they valued, or take part in family decisions. Choosing your own career does not have to mean rejecting your family's values. Many people find that once parents see their child is still theirs, still caring and still responsible, the career matters less.
Common trapthinking that independence means distance. In family-centred cultures, closeness is often what makes independence acceptable.
