Family expectations and your own path

Stage 2 of 7 · 7 lessons · ~1 week

Name the pressure you are under

Family pressure takes a few familiar shapes. Naming yours exactly, with its real constraints, is the first step to answering it. Not every family looks like these, and you may be under more than one.

Start: Doctor, engineer, CSS or nothing

Lessons· one lesson for each topic, in this order

  1. 1Doctor, engineer, CSS or nothing
  2. 2Switching from the "safe" degree
  3. 3Going abroad, or not being allowed to
  4. 4Marriage timing and career
  5. 5Being the eldest, and supporting siblings
  6. 6Being a daughter with fewer freedoms
  7. 7The family business or landOptional

Do this

  • Write which of these pressures apply to you, and add any that are missing
  • For each one, write the real constraint behind it: money, safety, status, duty or custom
  • Cost out finishing versus switching if you are in a degree you did not choose
  • Sketch a staged timeline if your family needs your income soon
  • Pick the one limit or pressure that matters most for your next step

Also worth your time

Before moving on: A short written description of the exact pressure you are under: what your family wants, the real constraints behind it (money, siblings, safety, marriage, business), and the one part of it you most need to change.

Tauseef's advice
Be specific. "My parents do not support me" cannot be solved. "My father wants me to finish my MBBS because he took a loan for it and is afraid I will waste it" can be worked with. The clearer you are about the real constraint, the more options appear.

Struggling right now? If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services or a crisis line: Find a helpline (any country), Umang (Pakistan), Tele-MANAS, 14416 (India).
