Family expectations and your own path

Stage 2 · Lesson 2 of 7

Switching from the "safe" degree

Name the pressure you are under

Many students sit in a degree their family chose and want to switch: from medicine to software, from engineering to design, from commerce to computing. Switching mid-degree is a big decision with real costs: fees already paid, years lost, a family that feels its sacrifice was wasted.

Sometimes the better move is to finish and build the new skill on the side, which more people do than you might think. Sometimes switching early is cheaper than four unhappy years. Work out both: what finishing costs you, and what switching costs your family. The Switch into Tech roadmap covers the career side in detail.
