Family expectations and your own path

Stage 2 · Lesson 5 of 7

Being the eldest, and supporting siblings

Name the pressure you are under

If you are the eldest, or the only son, or the first in your family at university, you may carry more than your own career. You may be expected to earn quickly, pay for siblings' education, help with a sister's wedding or take over when a parent retires or falls ill.

These expectations are often real needs, not just tradition. A path that takes five years to pay off may not be possible for you right now, and that is not a failure. It can mean a staged plan: a stable job first, your own direction built alongside it, the switch once siblings are settled.

Common trapchoosing between "my dream" and "my duty" as if there were only two options. Most people find a sequence that honours both.
