The family business or land
Some families expect a child, often a son, to join the shop, the factory, the practice or the land. It may be the family's main income and its identity across generations. Saying no can feel like abandoning your father's life work.
Options are often wider than yes or no: you could bring new skills into it, such as building its website, online sales or accounts software; join for a fixed period; help find or train someone else; or work elsewhere first and decide later. Ask what the business really needs: your presence, your name, or just someone reliable.
