Family expectations and your own path

Stage 2 · Lesson 1 of 7

Doctor, engineer, CSS or nothing

Name the pressure you are under

The classic pressure: a medical seat, an engineering degree, the civil services exam (CSS in Pakistan, UPSC in India, BCS in Bangladesh), or a government post. These paths are respected for good reasons: they are visible, stable, and understood by everyone in the family's circle.

The pressure is hardest when you have already started down one of them, or failed an entry test once and been told to try again. Be precise about your position. Do you dislike the work itself, the years of study, the competition, or only the fact that it was chosen for you? Each needs a different answer.

Common traparguing against the whole profession. Your parents will defend it, and you will lose the argument about your own life.
